CREATIVE USES OF ACID PRO

I thought a thread where we shared different and perhaps unusual ways of using ACID Pro to be creative would be cool.
Anyone up for that?

Here's mine: I love taking an ambient loop that has a definite tonal center (preferably without polyphony or harmony) and with a melody in your head you play the loop with your hand on the S key.

Now tap the rhythm of the melody that you have composed or improvised on the S key and go back and individually tune each individual split with the + and the - keys (you can, of course, go up
or down two octaves in half steps intervals).

What is cool is that if the ambient .wav is long the change in the timbre of the melody will be relatively random as you 'play' your melody across the length of the loop (or multiple loops).

In fact, you can loop the track in a separate ACID document at a completely different speed from the melody you have in mind for your piece of music.

A groovy way to get a very quirky ambient track to work with in the first place is to use the convolution program in whatever program you are using (I use Cool Edit Pro specifically for convolving sounds)
and convolve say, a single guitar harmonic or note with say, a drum set........................In this what you will get a long and constantly changing .wav that still has a definite tonal center.

Does this make sense? I"m writing it quickly.

Now, what other cool techniques have people stumbled on to use ACID?

This is the most amazing most fulfilling piece of software I own. I wish I had more time to devote to crreating new music. Someday...

This isn't nearly as creative as Rick's example above - and I know I ain't the first person to think of/do this - but I take things like clips of speech, field recordings of various things, recordings of phone line noise & clips, static, etc. and based on the elements in the waveform chop 'em up and turn them into beats. It's amazing what you can make a virtual drumkit from... suddenly belches and phone line pop n' crackle are unexpectedly rich sample sources.

oh, i think that is really creative!

sometimes the simplest techniques make the most interesting music.

There is , by the way, a very hip shareware program (that only costs $25)
called Tu2. Available for free in stripped down version at www.brambos.com.

Anyway, it will take any loop and slice it into even increments (that you can determine). Those increments can then be randomly shuffled or you can
manually shuffle them..............you can put hard noise gates on them (stutters)
and then you can individually draw in cutoff, resonance, panning, distortion, etc.

With this you then can create up to 12 loops using a grid and a simple mixer
and it allows you to turn things on an off on down beats manually as you
        'jam' with it.

I use the hell out of it on my CDs and it's fantastic for taking wierd ambient tracks and suddenly having them turn into really cool, but idiosyncratic
        grooves.

I recommend spending the $25 for the full version because the cheap one won't let you do so much to the loops.

It's an awesome adjunct to ACID because it spits out a .wav file and then you just import it into Acid and away you go.

I agree... there's something totally gratifying, addictive and just plain satisfying about this software. If you have a decent library of well organized, well-trimmed loops of audio you can just lose yourself for a whole night just playing with the possibilities of combining samples.

I like taking a little melodic loop... lets say a few bars of a randomly sampled classic disco/funk track and magnify it nice and large on the monitor. Go in and start splitting and extract little bits and pieces until the whole loop is splintered into fragments.. then start re-arranging the loop out of order, just playing with different possibilities... you'll be amazed at the stuff that jumps out of nowhere. This method, combined with the clever use of copy/paste, EQ and panning really allows you to rebuild a sample "from scratch" until the original sample is totally unrecognizable. I've achieved instant Daft Punk-style tracks in a matter of minutes - just stealing maybe two little hits out of one of my collection of samples i've gleaned from my vinyl collection.

      too much fun. :)

I know it sounds cliche but this program really becomes intuitive... granted I've been using it since I was a wee lad back in high school, but it has become an extension of my creative brain... don't even need to think about what I'm doing while I'm doing it. That to me is Acid's strongest point - it's inherent simplicity and ease of use allows you to focus on the creative process of songwriting.
